Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

About SEL

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process by which we develop our capacity to understand and manage our feelings, relate well to others, skillfully handle conflict and other life challenges, make good decisions, and take responsibility for improving our communities – from the classroom to the world.

SEL is a best practice for all students in every school. A growing body of research shows that students in high-quality SEL programs:

  • improve personal and social skills that are key to happiness in life
  • decrease their classroom misbehavior and aggression increase positive attitudes about themselves, others and school improve their attendance
  • reduce their anxiety and depression
  • are less like to be suspended
  • gain in achievement test scores and have better grades

At PS 182 students learn SEL skills through a multitude of programs that cover all SEL Core Competencies. We infuse SEL into every aspect of learning and foster growth mindset by working through challenges and valuing mistakes. We are dedicated to educating our students and providing them a safe space to practice and deepen their understanding of these important life skills.
